Criminal Misconduct in VA Hospital Secret Wait List Scandal Has Yielded Zero Arrests, Few Firings

WASHINGTON D.C. — A year has passed since news broke of a secret wait list scandal that caused or hastened the deaths of at least 40 veterans seeking care at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Phoenix.
Shortly after the Phoenix scandal, VA investigators revealed similar criminal misconduct was happening at VA hospitals nationwide, and that thousands of veterans being denied their legal right to medical care were going without. Many hundreds — perhaps even thousands — likely died of their illness while waiting months or years on the secret wait lists. Some of those veterans denied or delayed medical treatment by VA died from suicide in desperation.
The VA secretary, Eric Shinseki, was forced to resign when the scale of the scandal became headline news across America. Former corporate CEO Robert McDonald replaced Shinseki and vowed to fix VA. He said he would hold those involved with the secret wait lists and other offenses accountable.
However, not even one VA employee involved with the 2014 scandal has been arrested or even charged with a crime.
The New York Times reported today that only three VA employees have been fired for misconduct related to the wait lists.
